Oil changes are one of the most common types of car service here in our Subaru service center, and as such, we receive a lot of questions surrounding them. The vast majority of Maryland drivers know that they need to get Subaru oil changes regularly, but what exactly does regularly mean?
Our team of certified Subaru service experts is happy to share their expertise on oil change frequency.
Oil Change Interval for Older Cars
If you’re driving an older model or a used Subaru, the oil change interval is typically based on mileage and have two maintenance schedules. For cars driven in “normal” operation, your should get your oil changed every 3,000 miles or two times per year.
However, if you drive in “severe” conditions, you should maintain your car using a more rigorous schedule. These severe conditions include:
- Primarily short trips (five miles or less)
- ?Extremely hot, cold, or dusty climates
- Sustained stop-and-go driving
- Carrying heavy loads or a trailer
Oil Change Interval for Newer Cars
If you drive a newer model Subaru (the last five or so model years), it will likely come equipped with an oil-life monitoring system that automatically determines when an oil change is necessary. If your car has this, it will notify you with an alert on your instrument panel.
Remember when you get an oil change that most late-model cars require a synthetic-blend or full-synthetic, low-viscosity multi-grade, resource-conserving oil. This type of oil has the advantage of maximizing fuel economy and performance and minimizing engine friction.
When it is time for an oil change, schedule a service appointment with our mechanics at Herb Gordon Subaru.
