The Subaru Outback comes from an impressive performance, adventure, and safety legacy. Each new model continues to evolve so drivers and explorers can enjoy the very best of Subaru engineering. Learn about the history of the Subaru Outback when you visit Herb Gordon Subaru.

Early History

The Subaru Outback emerged from two distinct historical threads. The Subaru Outback Sport was derived from the Subaru Impreza as an off-road hatchback produced from 1994 to 2011. Today’s Subaru Outback was derived from the Subaru Legacy, a cross-over station wagon-style vehicle still in production.

The Subaru Legacy DNA is very apparent in the Subaru Outback introduced in 1994. Subsequent years would see only cosmetic adjustments. When the second-generation Subaru Outback wagon was introduced in the United States in 2000, it finally started looking like the model we all know and love today.

Modern History

The third-generation Subaru Outback started in 2003, and by 2008, the Subaru Legacy Wagon and Subaru Outback sedan were no longer being produced for the American market. The EyeSight® safety features Subaru is known for were introduced in Japan, and a diesel engine was introduced in Europe. The fourth-generation model years lasted from 2010 to 2014, and the fifth generation from 2015 to 2019, each adding to the prior models’ features and strengths.

The sixth and current generation of Subaru Outback has an SUV design, two powerful engine options, and style changes. With its standard all-wheel drive and a new Wilderness trim level, it is by far the most capable vehicle to bear the Outback name, and we’re proud to have it in our showroom.
