Electric Vehicle (EV) Glossary from Herb Gordon Subaru

When it comes to shopping for a Subaru EV (electric vehicle), the more you know, the better you'll feel about your purchase. To this end, the following EV glossary should be a big help for both experienced car buyers and first-timers.  

Battery Pack: the collective battery system in an EV sold at Herb Gordon Subaru. The battery pack is composed of modules, a surrounding enclosure, and high-voltage hardware, along with protective/structural features. 

Frunk: a portmanteau created by combining the words "front" and "trunk". Similar to a traditional trunk, a frunk is located in the front rather than the rear of the vehicle. Many EVs feature a frunk due to the extra space from not having a gasoline engine or traditional transmission.  

ICE: stands for "internal combustion engine", which is powered by fuel in the form of diesel or gasoline. Internal combustion engines were the standard for vehicles before the advent of the electric and hybrid cars you'll find today at our local Subaru dealership.  

Level 1 Charging: a type of EV battery charging usually done at home because it uses a typical 120-volt household outlet. Level 1 charging is typically done with a portable charging cord, which our Subaru parts department ensures is included with every Subaru EV.  

Level 2 Charging: Level 2 chargers need to be professionally installed in an EV owner's home. Level 2 chargers deliver faster charging times than Level 1 chargers, providing a full charge in about 8-12 hours.  

DC (Direct Current) Fast Charging: these are the most powerful EV chargers, and they're primarily available at public stations along interstate highways. DC Fast Charging allows for high power transfer (>50kW) and faster recharge times - think minutes instead of hours. 

Range: the total distance an electric vehicle can travel on one full charge before the battery needs to be recharged.
